Summer 2019

This summer I had an interesting time working on multiple rib cracks in an English cello. The cello was very old with thin ribs, and previous reinforcements caused the ribs to distort and crack more over time. There was also a small hole.

Other exciting things happened as well this summer. I took part in a weeklong course on violin varnish in Brittany in France, taught by expert François Perego from his studio in Dinan. The course has been going for a number of years in French, and this year for the first time it was interpreted into English. We had an extremely interesting time delving into the theory and practice of wood preparation, molecules, particles, lightwaves, colour systems and application techniques.
Our brains were provided with lots of exercise in the mornings and we tried out the new theory in practice in the afternoons. We had a lot of fun and came home with many varnish samples and even more inspiration and ideas for new things to try.
