Summer 2022

Earlier I started two new violins, the scrolls you may have seen in the 'Spring 2022' post. One of the scrolls has now got a body. It was actually started in 2020, but it went on hold for several times, with other jobs coming in between. In small steps it kept progressing though.
It started with choosing the wood:

After some deliberation I've got my winning team together. Here you see the spruce for the front on the left, maple for the back in the middle, and maple for the ribs on the right.

The actual woodwork starts by joining the two halves for the front together in the middle.
Then some planing is required. The undersides of the back and the front plates are flattened and the ribs need to be thicknessed. Quite a lot of shavings.
After the sides are bent I take the outline over to the back and front plates, cut them out and roughly (but systematically :)) shape the arching. When I get closer to the finished dimensions I cut the channel for the purfling, and then continue the arching with finer tools.
In the mean time the front has also taken shape:
